The Pros of Purchasing a Dishwasher

As technology continues to grow, we find ourselves indulging in more modern appliances that make our lives easier and better. From coffee makers that make lattes and frappucinos to an appliance that makes breakfast burritos in five minutes, you just have to ask the question and there probably exists an appliance for it. There are mini ovens and blenders that are designed to make things healthier and easier. Like these appliances, there are dishwashers. Although dishwashers were invented in the 1850’s, domestic dishwashers didn’t appear(minimally) until the 1920’s. Today dishwashers are highly advanced and designed to be more efficient. They are cleaner, they save water and they save your time.

Dishwashers Are Cleaner

Environmental health Professor Kelly Reynolds from the University of Arizona has stated that water must be over 140 degrees hot to kill most bacteria off a dirty dish. This is obviously impossible when washing by hand, but a dishwasher doesn’t have such barrier with the ability to be set to temperatures ranging from 130 to 170.

Dishwashers Save Water

Jonah Schein from the EPA’s WaterSense program, said in a statement, “While it may be possible to use less water/energy by washing dishes by hand, it is extremely unlikely.” While washing dishes by hand can use up to 20 gallons of water according to the Sunnyslope County Water District, modern dishwashers use from 2 to 8 gallons of water. After 2013, most dishwashers don’t surpass 5 gallons of water. Look at our past newsletter on green plumbing for more good information on water saving dishwashers.

Dishwashers Save Time

Rob Cockerham from Sacramento, California put this argument to the test. For his test he used a regular dose of “dishes,” from bowls, cups, utensils, containers, etc. In essence a whole bunch of stuff that will fill up a dishwasher. Washing & drying the dishes by hand took 37 minutes, while scraping, loading, and unloading the dishwasher took only 14 minutes of actual labor. That’s 23 minutes you can save! Who doesn’t like the idea of having top-notch clean dishes, or the fact that you’re contributing to helping save water during this drought? I doubt anyone. Also the time you save, whether it’s to go work on another task or spend some time with your family, in our day and age, time is valuable, so why not invest in saving it.
